Important updates for SNAP recipients 📍
Today I’m reaching out to share some important updates about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
SNAP benefits help more than two million people across our state access nutritious food for themselves and their families. In the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Federal Government increased benefits for SNAP recipients across the country. Unfortunately, these increased federal benefits are set to expire on March 1, 2023. You can read more about this upcoming change here.
This means that starting next month, SNAP recipients here in Illinois will see their benefits return to pre-pandemic levels. For many people that means their benefits will be reduced anywhere from $95 to $250 per person per month. SNAP recipients can always check on the status of their benefits online at abe.illinos.gov.
We know that this change will put a strain on families across our state who are already facing high costs at the grocery store. And while this change is due to federal policy decisions, and not policy changes here in Illinois, I’m committed to working with my colleagues in Springfield to identify ways that our state can step-up and help offer more relief to families who rely on SNAP to get food on their table.
In the meantime if you or someone you know is food insecure, I want to share a few food resources here in our community. You can click on the map below to explore food pantries around our district, and check out the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) for information on additional resources across our city.
If you’re looking for ways to help our community during this time I encourage you to reach out to your local food pantry to volunteer, donate to GCFD, or connect with one of our local Mutual Aid groups such as the Northwest Side Solidarity Network, Hermosa Mutual Aid or Logan Square Mutual Aid.
If you have questions about this upcoming benefit change or are looking for ways to help out families in our community please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office at will@repguzzardi.com or give us a call at (773) 853-2570.
All the best,
Representative Will Guzzardi,
39th District
