Eviction Prevention Information + Housing Assistance
Dear Neighbor,
As you may know, since early in the pandemic, the Governor has issued executive orders placing a moratorium on starting new eviction proceedings.
Last month, he extended that moratorium again, but narrowed it down considerably. That means that many people may become vulnerable to eviction as of tomorrow, December 1.
If you or someone you know has lost income due to COVID-19, and have fallen behind on rent payments, there's one really important thing you need to do: fill out this declaration form and give it to your landlord. The order says that your landlord should give you one of these forms themself, but it's better to be proactive. And give it to your landlord in a way you can prove: by text or email, or with a witness present.
If you fill out the declaration, you're protected by the moratorium and can't be evicted. If not, you can be.
I'm working with a group of my colleagues to push the Governor's office on this issue. And when the legislature reconvenes in January, many of us will be focusing on it as well. Rolling back this moratorium will put hundreds of thousands of people at risk of losing their homes, just as the state is shutting back down again amidst a surge of COVID cases. It's wrong and it's dangerous.
But it's the reality for the moment, so please spread the word about this declaration form, and fill it out if it applies to you. And scroll down for other financial assistance that's available if you're struggling to pay your mortgage or rent.
Sincerely,
- Will
