Legislative Updates from Springfield 📜

Dear Neighbor,

As committee deadline week approaches—the last week to pass new bills in House committees for this legislative session—I wanted to share that so far, four of my bills have passed through this step! Check out the graphics below to learn more about what these bills aim to accomplish in criminal justice reform and tenant protection.

HB 5396 improves the process for terminally ill and permanently disabled people in prison to seek early release.

HB 4776 bans the practice of incarcerating 13-year-old children in juvenile facilities.

HB 4770 keeps judges from imposing harsher prison sentences based on outdated and inaccurate presumptions of deterrence.

HB 4768 protects tenants who report unfit living conditions in their rented residences from being evicted in retaliation.

After the April 5 deadline, I'll call the bills in the House chamber. If we reach a 60-vote majority in support, the bills will go to the Senate for their vote, and then to the Governor to be signed into law. I’ll be sure to keep you posted on the progress of these pieces of legislation as session continues on.

All my best,
Will
